The Magic Planet was recently discussed on Teachers TV, where it was described by one of the panelists as "a sensational piece of equipment" and the teacher using it in the hands on section of the resource review commented: "ideally each school should have one, shared across the departments".
Hear what the panel thought by clicking on the "play now" button. |

In every edition of this newsletter we look at the wealth of free content that is available for The Magic Planet.
Global Imagination, the company that devised and makes the Magic Planet, has recently updated an animation for the Magic Planet that shows seismic activity on the Earth. As well as extending the time period of the previous exhibit (which went up to 1999), they have added a wealth of additional detail.
In addition to the earthquake location and date, the exhib shows the intensity and depth of the quake, plus volcanic eruptions over the same period. One of the best features of the animation is the way that the quakes and eruptions are shown cumulatively, so by the end of the sequence you can see clearly how seismic activity is concentrated on plate boundaries and is responsible for building geographic features in those areas.
The exhibit is free for existing Magic Planet customers. As the file is very large (500MB) to request your free (customers only) DVD of the entire animation by post, click here and include in your email your name, organisation, address and telephone number. Please allow up to two weeks for delivery.

Excellent news for Geographers and Historians - we have obtained a series of world maps showing the trends in world population growth from 1700 to 2000. The maps have been kindly provided by the United States Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service in Washington DC.
As you can see from the sample map for 2000 shown here, the level of detail on the maps is extremely high - and much more granular than simply country-by-country. To download a zip folder containing the images, click here. To install the images ready to use, unzip the images into a directory in your Story folder, e.g. c:\Program Files\Global Imagination\Story\Population\Historical Density 1700-2000. When you next open your StoryTeller software, you will have a new chapter called "Population" and a story within that chapter called "Historical Density 1700-2000". Note that the zipped folder also contains a "legend" document (in PowerPoint format), which explains the colours used on the maps.

Great content also available - PALEOMAP | |
|
|
Most of the content we discuss for the Magic Planet is free, such as the population density and earthquake animations, above.
Occasionally we hear about third party content where the developer has decided to charge for their work, but where the quality is so good and so useful that we think our customers will want to find out more. The range of paleological time animations from the PALEOMAP Project is one of these.
Led by Chris Scotese, Professor of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Texas at Arlington, the goal of the PALOMAP Project is to illustrate the plate tectonic development of the ocean basins and continents, as well as the changing distribution of land and sea during the past 1100 million years. We have illustrated here one of the frames from the beautiful and detailed PALEOMAP animation that shows the break up of Pangea, through to the modern era.
Futher details of the animations and the prices are available from info@scotese.com. To ensure you get the correct format, remember to indicate that you want to show the animation on your Magic Planet. If you are a teacher, educational pricing is available.
