Dear Colleague,

As the holiday season approaches and I look back on what we’ve accomplished since I began my editorship in 2009, I am proud to pilot the wonderful journal that is Cancer Cytopathology. We have had an outstanding 3 years and I want to take this opportunity to share with you the Journal’s many successes. In addition, I often have people ask me questions about how quickly we publish online, our peer review processes, and how the journal is doing. I think you’ll find the information provided below very helpful in answering the questions many of you may have as Editorial Board members, reviewers, and authors.

Celeste N. Powers

Over the last three years the American Cancer Society (ACS), the Associate Editors, and I have met and developed a strategy for the continued growth of Cancer Cytopathology. This strategy includes enhancements to our current electronic platform, a focus on certain preferred topics, and outreach to international authors. With continued strong ACS support I am confident that we will continue to be the “journal-of-choice” for cytopathology authors from the many pathology societies in North America and around the world.

The benchmarks of performance presented below reflect well on Cancer Cytopathology and are a direct result of your efforts! I want to extend my personal thanks and best wishes to all those who have participated in making Cancer Cytopathology the premier journal of our discipline, and on behalf of myself, the Associate Editors, and the American Cancer Society (ACS), we thank you, our reviewers and authors, for your interest and hard work which have led to these achievements.

Best wishes in the upcoming holiday season,

Celeste N. Powers, MD, PhD
Editor-in-Chief, Cancer Cytopathology

The American Cancer Society's Journals Program and Cancer Cytopathology

Cancer Cytopathology is part of a rich history of scholarly publication which began in 1948 with the launch of Cancer: Interdisciplinary International Journal of the American Cancer Society. The Society’s second journal, CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, was launched just a couple of years later in 1950. And of course, the most recent member of the American Cancer Society Family of Journals, Cancer Cytopathology, began print and online publication in 1997.

The American Cancer Society’s commitment and dedication to its journal publishing program has been critical to the success of each of these journals. Our program’s mission is clear:

  Cancer Cyto

The mission for the American Cancer Society Journals Program is to acquire, objectively peer review, and publish in a timely manner, the highest quality, scientifically based oncology content being written by leading scientists, researchers, and health care professionals and to present that content in all current and new media being used by the scholarly publishing community.

Cancer Cytopathology’s editorial mission is devoted to the larger program’s goal:

Cancer Cytopathology provides a unique forum for interaction and dissemination of original research and educational information relevant to the practice of cytopathology and its related oncologic disciplines. The journal strives to have a positive effect on prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and cure of cancer by the publication of high-quality content. The mission of Cancer Cytopathology is to present and inform readers of new applications, technological advances, cutting-edge research, novel applications of molecular techniques, and review articles relevant to cytopathology.

The Society’s journals program accomplishes these two missions by teaming the knowledgeable Editorial Staff (Managing Editors, Editorial Assistants, Business Directors, and others) with a well-known and established commercial publisher, Wiley-Blackwell, as well as clinician-scientists like me, my Associate Editors, and you, our editorial board. It is the joining of these resources that allows us to publish the very best content.

Continued Editorial Success

We continue to receive the best cytopathology manuscripts from North America, and increasingly from international sources as well. Future issues will continue to provide our readers with state-of-the-art information. Our review articles and commentaries have been designed to keep our readers current with evolving trends in our discipline.  Please visit our homepage for examples and much more.

New Editorial Initiatives

In the June 2010 issue, we premiered CytoSource, a section that explores current news and trends in medicine of interest to cytologists, bringing unique, interesting, and important information to our readership. CytoSource goes beyond delivering peer-reviewed research and commentary to report on news and issues that are relevant to readers such as interviews with key individuals in the field, policy updates, information regarding new technology and techniques, and balanced discussions of critical issues in cytopathology.

In August 2011, CytoSource launched its first reader poll intended to take the pulse of our readers concerning important trends and hot topics. CytoSource polls have focused on topics such as ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration and the use of social media in pathology. Follow this link to see the results!

In keeping with our mission and the mission of the ACS to provide an interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of knowledge and ideas related to the fields of cytopathology and oncology, for several years the journal has also offered Cancer Cytopathology Complimentary. This online feature showcases newly published online content, selected by me, allowing us to highlight interesting reviews, novel research, or hot new topics. These articles are placed outside the firewall, making them freely available to all readers. Individuals visiting our Web site can access these articles, which are updated on an ongoing basis and showcase the high-quality content published in the journal, by clicking on the Cancer Cytopathology Complimentary icon on the homepage. So, please take a moment to access Cancer Cytopathology online; this will be an evolving site as we bring more enhancements and applications to you throughout the coming months.

FAST Peer Review

The Associate Editors and I triage every submission prior to any review. We pride ourselves on getting papers reviewed quickly so that authors know exactly where they stand and can submit to another journal if their paper does not meet our threshold for acceptance. As we all know, speed as well as quality of review is critical to a journal’s success. Manuscripts submitted to Cancer Cytopathology are reviewed and a decision rendered within 2.5 weeks on average.

RAPID Online Publication

Simply said, authors who submit their work to us and pass our rigorous peer review get published faster. Our Editors, Board, and Reviewers are unparalleled in their dedication to rapid turnaround of manuscripts. The chart below illustrates how we stack up with the competition.

Rapid

Note: Data includes Original Articles published in 2010. Cytopathology does not list its time to publication and thus is not included in this chart.

Never Any Authors Fees

For those of you who may not know, none of the ACS Journals charge author fees for submission, page charges, or color figures. And, all content is free online after 12 months. If an author wants to make an article open access upon publication, they can do so for a fee.

An Enviable Impact Factor

We are the top journal in cytopathology, and our impact factor speaks for itself.

Affiliations

Though it began as a section of Cancer, Cancer Cytopathology grew quickly, developing its independence and becoming the premier journal in the field of cytopathology.

In 2005, the American Cancer Society partnered with the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC) to make Cancer Cytopathology their official journal for a period of 6 years. This allowed ASC members to receive the journal at a discounted rate and use the journal to promote the ASC annual meeting. After much consideration, the American Cancer Society decided that it was in the best interest of our journal publishing program to discontinue external society affiliations for all our journals.

While we are no longer the official journal of the ASC, our publisher has provided a discounted subscription rate to the ASC membership for 2010-2013 so that these readers can continue to have access to our content
