Asian Diaspora
Earlier this month I found myself on a panel at the University of Puget Sound. Our topic of discussion was Asian Diaspora. I have some information and some relevant experience, however I would never consider myself qualified to speak on such a subject with much authority. So I researched. My research was primarily to identify dates and confirm information I already knew. My primary qualification was my background as an Asian American and being associated with APCC. The topic is fascinating to me.  Time Magazine has a great site with lots of easily digested information. Visit their site here.

An Anniversary We Can't Forget
As most of you know we just passed the one year anniversary of the Virgina Tech shootings.

VT Vigil

What I heard in the news was a lot of discussion over gun rights. The more important discussion should have been around cultural education and understanding. As we learn about the different cultures in our community we start to build understanding and tolerance. We should celebrate the cultures in our community.

Our cultural treasure trunks are available to schools as a rental for $50 per week. This includes all of the trunk items along with the teacher's guide and presentation guide. Schools also have the option of scheduling a cultural interpreter to come and perform the trunk presentations. A half-day time slot costs $300.

Our goal is to get the trunks in front of as many students as possible. Businesses and individuals can donate towards a trunk presentation or trunk rental. We will keep you informed of the presentation and outcome. We can, at your discretion, acknowledge your contribution aurally at the presentation, in our newsletter and on our website. Businesses can have their logo displayed on our website as part of their recognition.

Visit our website for more information on the Cultural Treasure Trunk Program and opportunities for sponsorship.

We an always use speakers who are passionate about their culture. You don't need to be an expert. It is far more interesting to hear your personal experiences and knowledge. Email us or call us at 253-383-3900 if you are interested in becoming a part of our speaker bureau.

Becoming American
If you haven't been able to see this exhibit yet, you need to put it on your calendar. There are portraits of teenagers who have immigrated to the United States displayed with their impressions. The video APCC has been working on these past few months is available for viewing as part of the exhibit. Partnering with Bates Technical College and the Washington State Historical Society, and funded through a grant from the Smithsonian Institute, the video features interviews of local Asian immigrants who arrived as teenagers and their impressions and recollections of what their journey to becoming American was like.
