Open House

Thanks to those who attended our open house on April 5th. I really enjoyed meeting and talking to everyone. Several people came from out of state, but the long distance award goes to Tom Moore (better known as Tom SoCal and the Author of Greene and Greene on the Antique Road Show) from southern California. For those of you that were not able to attend, my friend Tim Celeski took several 360-degree images of the shop which I have posted to my website. The shop you see in Tim’s photos is a very clean one - not a trace of sawdust to be seen. We are now back to work in the shop with sawdust and all.

This is the latest addition to my Aurora Series. Narrow shelves are behind the doors on either end with wider shelves behind the two center doors. This unit can be used as either an office credenza or a dining room sideboard. The piece in the above photo was a commissioined, but I have another one in process that can be made ready to ship with a 3-4 week notice.

Teaching Schedule
With the need to catch up after the lost time due to the new shop construction, I will be scheduling fewer classes for the foreseeable future.

The Port Townsend School has only been open for a few weeks. It is owned and operated by Jim Tolpin, John Marckworth, and Tim Lawson. I am very excited to be on the schedule there. Port Townsend is a wonderful place. Its a community full of artists, woodworkers and is well known for its Wooden Boat Festival. The school is located in Fort Warden State Park where and Officer and a Gentleman was filmed. It's a great location for a relaxing weekend  and  gives me an excuse to visit my Uncle Aubrey and Aunt Margot who live there.

Port Townsend WA
July 12th &13th 2008
It's the special details that make the Greene and Greene style unique. This two–day class will take you step-by-step through the process of producing several of the classic Greene and Greene details. This is a hands-on class. Everyone will produce one of the leg/apron/top samples shown here.
Some of the topics included will be:

• Proud ebony plugs
• Cloud lifts
• Leg indent detail
• Blacker brackets
• Breadboard construction
• Exposed ebony spline

I do not have any classes scheduled at William Ng's for the remainder of this year, but William and I have been discussing next year’s project class: we have tentatively decided upon my new  Arched Aurora End Table Design. The class will probably be scheduled for next spring sometime.

Web-Cam Coming Soon (well maybe)
Lately I have been considering mounting a webcam in my shop and broadcasting live from my website. The problem is: I know nothing about setting this up. Is there anyone out that that can point me in the right direction? And more importantly, is there any interest in this? Please e-mail me  with your thoughts on either of these questions.

Custom Woodworking Business Magazine
Look in the current issue of CWB for a profile of me. Sorry this is a trade magazine and not available at your local newsstand.  But don't despair the article is online.

Furniture Schedule

As I mentioned in the last newsletter the new shop has taken a lot longer to complete than anticipated and as a result my schedule is still quite a bit behind. I want to thank my loyal clients for their continued patience. I plan on being completely caught up in the next few months.
In the meantime: I have a few pieces of furniture in stock and ready for immediate shipment . These pieces are not tied to the production schedule. Contact me for availability.

Popular Woodworking
My little essay entitled Regulae Stultis Sunt (Rules are for Fools) caught the attention of Bob Lang (author of Shop Drawings for Greene & Greene Furniture) who is one of the editors at Popular Woodworking. Bob has asked me to write a condensed version of the essay for publication. Look for it sometime later this year or early next year.

 Article  for American Woodworker

Randy Johnson of American Woodworker contacted me a few weeks ago to ask if I would be interested in doing an article . I suggested building my new Arched Aurora End Table  for his readers. I won’t start on the article for a few months yet, so look for publication some time early next year.
